Irvine, CA -- Wild Rivers water park in Irvine found out last Thursday that they won't have to vacate their current location at the end of this season. The water park was granted a one-year lease extension by The Irvine Company to help the park while they search for a new location.
Earlier this summer Wild Rivers announced that it would be their last season after they failed to obtain on a new lease from The Irvine Company. The South Orange County water park has been operating in Irvine for 20 years.
The Irvine Company said it wouldn't renew the water park lease because it plans to build 3,700 new homes on the land occupied by Wild Rivers, Verizon Ampitheater and a camp. The lease for the amphitheater expires in 2017.
Wild Rivers hopes it will find a new location in South Orange County to build a new water park. The company has been looking at sites in nearby Tustin and had previously asked the Great Park to consider leasing it space.
According to Wild Rivers since they announced the closure there has been an outpouring of community support.
Wild Rivers water park says it attracts approximately 400,000 visitors each year.
