Charlotte, N.C. -- Boomerang Bay water park at Carowinds will be expanded with a new wave pool, cabanas and chair-side service for the upcoming 2008 season. This multi-million dollar expansion is the second in three years and will four acres to the existing water park.

The new 600,000 gallon Bondi Beach (pronounced Bond-eye) wave pool will total more than 34,000 square feet and offer 275-feet of "beach frontage" giving guests ample opportunity to sunbathe as they watch the waves roll in on the zero-depth entry. Bondi Beach is the second wave pool at Boomerang Bay and is 9,000 square feet larger than the existing Great Barrier Reef pool.

"Boomerang Bay continues to grow in popularity each season at the park," said John Shanrock, vice president and general manager of Carowinds. "Even with expansion occurring just two years ago, there's a need for additional space and attractions, as well as demand for the new amenities that we'll be offering in 2008."

Carowinds says Bondi Beach will measure 75 feet at its widest point on the deep end with a maximum depth of six feet. Special water effects in the form of geysers will be located in the shallow end of the pool.

Bondi Beach borrows its name from the world-famous Australian beach located less than five miles from Sydney.

To further enhance service and comfort in this newly expanded areas, Carowinds plans to add an additional 16 rental cabanas around the wave pool. The cabanas provide a great way to beach the heat in a comfortable, shady setting and come complete with chair-side service from one of the park's eateries.

Shanrock added, "Our guests are telling us that they want to see more in the water park, so we're happy to give them Bondi Beach and much more."

Carowinds is also including a new walk-up concession called Beach Bites with a patio, new restroom and bathhouse facility, plus tube rentals for the wave pool and additional rental lockers. Outback Outfitters, a new merchandise and apparel store is also part of the expansion plan.

When completed the Bondi Beach expansion will expand the size of Boomerang Bay to 20 acres and the total size of Carowinds theme park to 112 acres.

Boomerang Bay water park takes its theme from Australia's Gold Coast and offers a number of exciting water attractions for all ages. Besides Bondi Beach, the water park features three additional pools, fast flowing water slides and a 1,000-foot long lazy river. The park also offers a three-story water playground with interactive features and a 1,000-gallon drenching bucket.

"You only need to take a walk through Boomerang Bay for a few minutes during the height of the summer season to see the popularity of all of the great attractions that our water park has to offer," Shanrock said. "Bondi Beach and the other additions next season are sure to add even more memorable summertime experiences for our guests."
